W. Rivera's Final Blog post: Reflection

I learned a lot less than what I could have potentially learned this semester by not being full attentive to my assignments and dedicating myself 100%. I always have this problem every time I attend classes of any sort. I'll be there the first day, but quickly will begin to get uninterested in completing my assignments.  Thankfully I had a divine intervention before that process could be insured. I was able to get through a successful freshman semester, barely.

In my Art and Society class was a really big pleasure because I although I did not right many papers I had participated in the class trips to various museums in New York City. These class trips are easily my favorite days of this semester because I’ve finally been acclimated in enjoying the arts as a hobby, as a requirement and because it is the best available idea presently. I definitely intend on spending much of my summer acquiring and exchanging wisdoms based on philosophy of art and the desire of human expression.

One thing that I had definitely been spooked out at the very beginning of the semester and played mind tricks on me was a pictorial representation of a man wearing a sort of “all-seeing-eye” hat. I remember how I felt when professor showed the class that image... I wanted to express multiple emotions simultaneously but did not know what would have been an acceptable addition to class discussion.

After an entire semester of attending every art and society class I feel I has been ignited and instilled with an ability to express my creative aspects more thoroughly. Although I will never be a painter, or do a sculpture, I’m aware of the usage of new media, fourth dimensional art instances and many new technological advances. Technology has given any and everyone a chance to make art. I even am no longer shameful in my selfie attempts thanks to this class. I feel I can be myself more so than prior to this semester.

Blog Post #10

By watching tv, going to museums, walking through the city, going to a performing arts high school, and by having friends who create art I have been surrounded by art all my life. I never really understood art or looked at art for more than its aesthetic value. This class has helped me understand more of art's meanings. The class started off with teaching how to describe the visual parts of art. By learning about the visual elements like line, shape, value, color, texture, and pattern I could begin to describe art more clearly to others and myself. Then I learned about figurative art. How artists depict bodies and their meaning in the art. These were things I had never bothered to think about before. When the class moved on to talk about "selfies" the class had to make their own art. For that assignment I understood art more than before and how to make art with meaning. My "selfie" self-portrait was a picture of my room to show certain things about me. I cleaned my room so people would think I'm tidy and I positioned the objects in the picture. I understood the decisions I was making and what meaning I wanted to give the piece while I was making it. Through this class I have understood more about how art is made and for what purpose it serves.

I’ve always admired and understood art to a certain degree, but I had never taken a class on the subject. It was interesting to explore the fundamental components of artwork – the vocabulary, the techniques, the reasoning behind various artistic choices. I believe it’s important to have some sort of structural outline when wanting to engage art and that’s exactly what this class helped accomplish. The progressing enjoyment of artwork was also exciting. I definitely feel an enhanced experience when viewing art in comparison to how I felt about it when the semester first started. The class balanced well with the other two major subjects in the cluster. We’d write an essay in ENG 101, and then visit the painting we wrote about in this class. That type of balance gave purpose to what we were doing and provided motivation. Visiting the galleries was great; they’re my favorite to visit consistently. There’s usually many events going on and it’s always fun to engage in those activities. The New Museum was probably my favorite trip, it provided insight on what’s relevant in the art world, what artist’s are exploring, and also in what direction art is headed. I will definitely continue visiting the locations we have so far along with the various others around NYC, our city is definitely one that encourages creativity. I’m also looking forward to taking at least one art class during each of my semesters at LaGuardia, even though art isn’t my exact passion; I still see it as a necessary part of human life.

I walked into to this class, Art and Society , expecting this class to be another class where we'd sit and learn facts but it was different. This class taught me to look around me the places i see the environment i'm in as art. Learning that art isn't  simply paintings , that in art theirs sculptures, monuments, interpretive art involving people  pointing at society's faults and beauty. I made friends and i hope we keep in contact and hang out cause it was a blast being around them even if i was the fly on the wall. Even creating the final project taking what we learned and being creative making monuments ,a 3d representation .  The museum trips were fun Brooklyn,The Met,The new Museum ,and a couple of galleries . My Two favorite museum visits were The New Museum ,and Brooklyn. In the New Museum abstract ,interactive ,and short film work was considered art and it was interesting. Even the stairwell to each floor meant a different sound or song which was awesome. The Brooklyn museum was the first museum i've been to in awhile and it was nice to actually experience culture other than watching T.v.  If Anyone wants to keep in touch after this class Just look me up on facebook . Peace out and its been a blast.

Out of all of my classes, this one was definitely my favorite. I have definitely learned plenty of things. At first when I looked at art I wouldn’t really consider it as art, but after learning different terms, and going more into the different elements of art, I have learned to look at art through a different perspective. You start to realize that every single thing around you is practically art. Everywhere I go and see something unusual, even something silly like a stain on the sidewalk or some random object lying around, I think of it in a creative way. And I’ve dragged that “skill” along with me through all the places visited in class as well. I’ve enjoyed all of the trips we had the MET falling in second place, but I think that my favorite trip of this semester was most likely the most recent one going to the high line and some galleries around Chelsea. There was one gallery in particular where it was in complete darkness, and had certain objects like books covered in neon lights. I enjoyed “exploring around”, I’ve actually even started to visit more places around the city to try and find some cool things. This class has taught me a lot and it was also fun, it always kept me involved and interested sue to the fact that it actually involved using our creativity. So I’d like to thank Professor Elsayed and the class for making this semester, and class a blast.

Aaaand here are some pictures from the trip

Art and Society this Spring has been an insightful and refreshing experience. I especially appreciated how lessons progressed – starting off with learning how to describe and talk about art properly and then ending, ultimately, with creating our own 3D art. And in between, it was neat to be introduced to the concept of accidental art and different kinds of self-portraits. Doing the accidental art assignment has allowed me to look at New York City with a creative lens and has given me a newly found appreciation for what would usually be regarded as functional/everyday objects and places. Furthermore, this creative lens has let me conclude that art is indeed everywhere and I am lucky enough to be in a city where folks’ creativity extends from their careers to their clothes.

Moreover, being exposed to various types of self-portraits truly widened my ideas about art. Deriving inspiration from examples of non-traditional self-portraits in class, I was able to channel my creative juices and produce my own non-traditional self-portrait that I was quite proud of because of how perfectly I captured the specific part of my identity that I was trying to convey.

In addition to the crisp outlook that Art and Society has helped me hone, it was also a divine experience to be part of a class that incorporated museum trips. This class was absolutely a breath of fresh air from past college classes I’ve taken that were very lecture-driven.

All in all, this class has definitely helped in developing my creative perspective and for that I am grateful.

I remember walking into this art and society class without a clue of what art meant . When I saw art it really didn't mean anything to me till after I started comprehending the terms in class. I learned that everything can be a work of art if you declare it and if it has a title. I went from viewing different types of artworks and not knowing a thing about it to viewing different types of artwork and comprehending the piece of art. I believe that this world is surrounded by art and without art everything would just be so dull , art gives people excitement. Yes I look at art very differently now , it all makes sense to me. From now on I will be going to different galleries, and museums to learn more about different types of art work . This class enhanced my creativity skills. Everything that is art related I view it differently than when I first started the class. The trip I enjoyed the most was our last trip when we went to different art galleries and saw different types of art works . Also when we walked on the high line and saw how creative these people were by creating the train tracks a board walk and including different types of art work. I found this course to be very valuable, now I'm able too look at art in different perspectives ,understand it and use the right terms. Thank you professor for enhancing my creativity skills and for being such an amazing professor.

i want to start off with one of my favorite quotations by Helena Bonham Carter, “I think everything in life is art. What you do. How you dress. The way you love someone, and how you talk. Your smile and your personality. What you believe in, and all your dreams. The way you drink your tea. How you decorate your home. Or party. Your grocery list. The food you make. How your writing looks. And the way you feel. Life is art.” I totally agree with Carter. I believe that everything in our life and life itself is art because it makes you feel things and it also helps you to express what you feel. I’m glad I took this class because it made my beliefs stronger. All the talks in class about different styles of art, different artists and the visual elements of art works helped me understand how art works, what a work shows and says. It made my every museum experience better. I was actually able to think and understand different type of artworks and I was also able to talk about some in the weekly blog posts. It was a fun experience because I didn’t feel like I was studying and writing papers for college. I loved all the museum trips especially the trip to the Metropolitan Museum of art because i was able to see all the Van Gogh paintings in person (I’m a big fan of him) and also other famous art works from different cultures. I also loved the day we spent in the sculpture room. It was like being alone in a beautiful place though I wasn’t alone. Sitting by the gigantic window, watching everyone work on their art projects on a beautiful day like that made me realize, how much art matters in our lives and how weirdly happy or sad it can make you feel like Vincent Van Gogh said, “I want to touch people with my art. I want them to say, he feels deeply, he feels tenderly.”

Art & Society

I was always interested in art, but didn’t understand the importance of it. Art became a hobby for me, not something I paid mind to every day. 3months ago I was clueless about the vocabulary one uses to speak about art or even being able to describe it, now I’m to able to identify what is art, what can be art and how art is every where you go. Art can be a splat of paint on the wall; it’s all about a person’s perception of it. Taking this course made me view art differently because art has enhanced my creativity, I tend to express myself through photos and painting. I tend to be more observant of what’s around me.

I look at art differently because it takes me away from my every day living and keeps me sane. I usually go to differently art institutions on my spare time and will continue, I try to visit different events once a month. The trip I enjoyed to most would be the Brooklyn Museum; I had the opportunity to visit one of my favorite artists Kehinde Wiley and Chitra Ganesh. I also did meet and great with Chitra Ganesh It was a great experience because I was studying and following Kehinde Wiley art even before I attended LaGuardia. It was great to see that my professor and classmates can appreciate the same interest of Kehinde Wiley work as I did. Overall I found this course to be very valuable because I’m now able to put into practice what I’ve learned, I’m able to walk into any museum or gallery and speak about a work of art in a professional way.

Final Blog Post My Experience and Growth…

Since being creative is an option I decided to write creatively. This class HUP192 has taught me a lot I didn’t know before. At first I do admit I didn’t think it would be interesting but after being in the class and started to get to know everyone and my amazing teacher I learned a lot. It opened my eyes and my love for art and to also know that my art teacher had her art in gallery’s made me want to really work hard on my art to have my work shown in gallery’s. Who knows I may even have a chance to travel and share my work with others artists. I gained knowledge about art, I learned to look at art differently to actually value it and to understand more what it can do, and I learned to speak more art language heh. I feel so sad leaving this class already I enjoyed our last trip because I went somewhere where I didn’t imagine there be art. The gallery’s so close to one another and the different artwork we saw was amazing. Also the walk on the bridge was just breath taking, I literally fell in love. I wish to return there again with my best friend and I would show off my art talk in detail. And our professor was really enjoyable she was my top favorite seriously she is a beauty. She made me feel at home in the class not only because she would let us leave early but this class in overall is informative but really creative and fun. I enjoyed doing the final project it was really fun and the feedback the professor gave us helped a lot. We all had a creative insight even though some students didn’t think that but I felt everyone in that class were meant to be together, and I really hope that we all get to meet again. I feel really proud and glad I was part of this class I learned a lot and meet amazing people. It was a pleasure and an enjoyment my reflection on this is to practice more on my art and to never stop believing in myself. I learned to go beyond and everywhere I go I look around and see everything different the art. Is everywhere and it does influence us. I do thank my professor for this encouragement she has given me.  Thank You!!

My ideas about art and artists have changed drastically since taking this course. I took hands-on art classes all throughout high school. However, I only had two different teachers, so my experiences were limited. When I was given a specific assignment, often I was allowed very little creative input, and I had trouble completing it because of my lack of motivation. I wasn't interested in making something that every other person in the class was also making. We were judged on how well we followed the cookie-cutter instructions for the assignments. In my head, there was a certain way to use a given medium to make art, and I've since learned that is completely untrue. This held me back and made me less interested in art as a whole. This course helped me to take a step back and focus more on the people and their intentions behind the art. My favorite trip was to the Metropolitan Museum of Art. It has art from every century, region, and medium and it's so gigantic that every visit is a new experience. I never would have imagined that handmade furniture would be on display in a museum, and this excited me even more because of my love for Interior Design. I made a list of the free days and times of every museum and gallery and I plan on visiting them all before I leave at the end of September. On my drive to Wisconsin, I'm stopping at the Mütter Museum in Philadelphia and will possibly add more museum stops if time allows. I was never presented art in a way that inspired me before this course. I think the split time between lectures and trips is a great way for students to learn the material. I loved every trip we had, and I've learned invaluable things that I will keep with me as I continue my journey of creative expression.

My monument proposal is dedicated to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, a humanitarian foundation which recruits nurses, surgeons, physicians, midwives, pharmacists, lab technicians and health administrators from all over the world to work in areas that need the most attention for outbreaks, disease, malnutrition, mental health issues and natural disasters. The care they provide is free and available to anyone in need. There are more 30,000 workers in the field on any given day. MSF has conducted more than 8.3 million consultations, 78,000 surgical procedures and delivered over 185,000 babies in approximately 70 countries since 1971. Once MSF has provided relief and the area has improved, the locals are able to take over operations. 88 cents of every donated dollar goes directly toward the services. The monument will take the shape of a large, square tent: 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide. One side is open, and there is a roof symbolizing security. On the inside, there is a life-size scene: a bed with a patient who is looking up at a doctor checking his heart with a stethoscope, two facing chairs: one for therapist and another for patient, a first aid kit with medicine and vaccines, and stacked boxes of therapeutic food. There is a world map that takes up the entire wall that is straight ahead of the opening. There are red dots on every country they have helped. Above the map, there is an engraved quote from the president of MSF in 1999, Dr. James Orbinski, when he was accepting the Nobel Peace Prize. "Humanitarian action is more than simple generosity, simple charity. It aims to build spaces of normalcy in the midst of what is abnormal." Every part will be made of concrete, except for the grass floor. I chose this style for my monument because I want it to represent what MSF is all about: selfless professionals helping their fellow mankind. The location would be in the middle of Times Square, which generates half a million people in a given day. This is important because it would be reached by a massive audience, drawing more attention and monetary donations to this wonderful cause. This foundation views the entire world as a community. All of humanity should be treated with love and respect.
