Essay #1

“Naomi And Her Daughters” (2013) 2D oil painting on canvas. Measuring 108 x 90 inches by Kehinde Wiley, located at the Brooklyn Museum. As a spectator of this painting I enjoyed all of Kehinde paintings, having to narrow it down to one was a difficult decision. I came across “Naomi And Her Daughters”, almost immediately Kehinde concept was revealed to me. He was trying to give his interpretation of George Dawe 1804 piece also called “Naomi and Her Daughters. In this piece one daughter was trying to leave while the other vow to stay with her mother during a time of poverty and suffering. Kehinde Wiley depicts the original painting to his liking. The background of this painting shows vivid colors of green, yellow, purple, orange flowers in a pattern form. As I gazed closely to this painting I saw wide amount of navy blue negative space. I also saw that Kehinde representational because it’s a true depiction of everyday living.

“Eyes Of Time “(2014) 2D wall mural. Located in the Brooklyn museum by Chitra Ganesh. This mural shows a depiction of a goddess name kali. She’s the goddess of time, change and destruction. As a spectator of this painting the section that caught my eye the most is middle image. Kali has a gold old fashion clock replacing her head. Chitra Ganesh displays kali with six arms, three legs, three breasts and a skirt with ten arms. Chitra Ganesh also displayed cool colors of blue on kali and warm colors for the background of mellow yellow, faded red and a faded blue. This is a stylized because it depicts the human form in an abstract format.

With the two exhibits that I saw I enjoy the energy I got from walking into the room. Kehinde Wiley paintings always impress me because of how realistic his characters look in 2d form. He’s shows a great representation of the everyday African American. I also like how he removes the white European man and replaces it with a regular person from the street, with a wide spread of vibrant colors in the background. On the other hand Meeting with Chitra Ganesh on Monday and having a better understanding of her work I feel like I have more of a connection with her art piece now then I did before visiting the Brooklyn museum. Chitra Ganesh work is a combination, feminine power, Mythology and science fiction. Overall these two pieces show women who are in empower in their current state.
