This is Federic Edwib Church's Heart of the Andes, the mediums used were oil, canvas, and a pencil. This painting was created in Ecuador, in 1859. It is a representational style, with a mixture of primary and secondary colors. The texture is smooth, the value is light, and there is no negative space. This is 2D with organic shapes. It is hard to point out the lines, they are going in all directions. On the waterfall, the lines are vertical showing movement, and there is no pattern. What Church wanted to show was the difference in climate, the tropical and frigid. The landscape in the front looks tropical, warm weather. If you look towards the top left, you can see a mountain covered in snow, displaying the frigid. This was originally made with a window frame and asked viewers to observe it through opera glasses so they could get the feel he did, to share his adventure. The window frame is now lost.
This is Jean-Baptiste Carpeaux's Ugolino and His Sons made out of Saint-Beat marble. This was made in Paris in 1865-67. The style is representational and it is also realistic. There are no colors in this, just white marble, and the texture is smooth. The value is light, no pattern, and it seems as if the bodies are formed in a way to shape a pyramid. The negative space is in between the bodies, the shapes are organic, and this is 3D. The man sitting on top is Ugolino, he was chained to his sons and grandsons in a tower. They were forced to choose between starvation and cannibalism. The best part about this sculpture is you can see the pain and anguish in Ugolino's face.
This is Massimilliano Soldani Benzi's The Agony in the Garden made out of Terracotta. This was made in Florence in the late 17th century-early 18th century. Texture is smooth, no pattern, and no color. There is no pattern, and a mix between 2D and 3D. The value is light and the figures also seem to be leading upward. The negative space is the background, I would say only the figures are the positive space. The man on the floor is Jesus, and the angels are there to comfort him because he is in agony. He is in agony because he knows he must suffer the next day on the cross for the sins of mankind.
This was made by the 'Bana peoples from Eastern Gongola Valley, and its called Male Figure. It was made around the 19th century and it is made out of wood. This is organic shape, and only secondary color. The texture is firm, and course. There is no pattern, all the lines are vertical, and this is 3D. This figure is stylized, and the negative space is all around the figure. These sculptures were made with a broad chest and legs on purpose. After someone pasted away, they would create these sculptures to honor the dead, and they carried this as though it were a body through their ritual dance.
This is called the Panpiper Vessel from Peru, from the 14th-15h century. It is made from hammered silkier and turquoise inlay. The style is representational and since it is not made after a specific person, so it is stylized. The color is gray, and the eyes are green, which is secondary. There is no pattern, it is 3D, and it has both organic and geometric in shape. The value is dark, and there is a lot of vertical and horizontal lines. Music was a huge part of ancient America's culture. Other instruments used include drums, horns, and rattles. They used these instruments while they worked in the fields and while herding. The panpipe was used mostly during religious and political ceremonies.
My guess as to why these items are in the museum is because they are rare and fragile. Some works of are I seen had a shade over it because the light would damage it. I would love to have all of these items in my house, but that would also be extremely selfish to not allow other people to view it as well. So these items are in the museum so all people can see its beauty.
