Blog Post #9

My monument proposal is dedicated to Doctors Without Borders/Médecins Sans Frontières, a humanitarian foundation which recruits nurses, surgeons, physicians, midwives, pharmacists, lab technicians and health administrators from all over the world to work in areas that need the most attention for outbreaks, disease, malnutrition, mental health issues and natural disasters. The care they provide is free and available to anyone in need. There are more 30,000 workers in the field on any given day. MSF has conducted more than 8.3 million consultations, 78,000 surgical procedures and delivered over 185,000 babies in approximately 70 countries since 1971. Once MSF has provided relief and the area has improved, the locals are able to take over operations. 88 cents of every donated dollar goes directly toward the services. The monument will take the shape of a large, square tent: 8 feet tall and 8 feet wide. One side is open, and there is a roof symbolizing security. On the inside, there is a life-size scene: a bed with a patient who is looking up at a doctor checking his heart with a stethoscope, two facing chairs: one for therapist and another for patient, a first aid kit with medicine and vaccines, and stacked boxes of therapeutic food. There is a world map that takes up the entire wall that is straight ahead of the opening. There are red dots on every country they have helped. Above the map, there is an engraved quote from the president of MSF in 1999, Dr. James Orbinski, when he was accepting the Nobel Peace Prize. "Humanitarian action is more than simple generosity, simple charity. It aims to build spaces of normalcy in the midst of what is abnormal." Every part will be made of concrete, except for the grass floor. I chose this style for my monument because I want it to represent what MSF is all about: selfless professionals helping their fellow mankind. The location would be in the middle of Times Square, which generates half a million people in a given day. This is important because it would be reached by a massive audience, drawing more attention and monetary donations to this wonderful cause. This foundation views the entire world as a community. All of humanity should be treated with love and respect.

“I fear the day that technology will surpass our human interaction. The world will have a generation of idiots.”
                                              - Albert Einstein

I have to say technology has made all of our lives easier from shopping, communicating, voicing opinions, social media, and even entertainment.  So why is it that we depend on it so much that if tomorrow ,the internet completely shut down no more cell phones , tablets , smart phones ,computers would we even last a month or even a day. I seriously I doubt it we’ve become so reliant on it . It’s like the appendix we have one but why do we need it. My monument and or project speaks to this criticism. It shows a sale on Human appendages that have been abandoned for the high tech upgrades. The two customers in question are shopping for appendages that have been long forgotten. They’re finding it difficult since with all puns intended costing them an arm and a leg.My inspiration for this project was my own obsession with technology. And my utter dependence on it sometimes borders on addiction. But when i look around i'm not that different from many i see riding the subway, or even taking the bus .

Final Project

The piece I have created is named “Flowers not towers”. It is a tower decorated in both purple and white flowers, with growing stems which have leaves, representing the “antennae” of which a tower would have. It would be located around the area of the desired place of the park to be built, and the flowers would be real, making this monument a temporary installation. This proposition of a monument is based on a current situation occurring in the Greenpoint and Williamsburg neighborhood area. Although it is based on a particular area, it can as well be applied to all cities, towns, etc. I think with this monument which would be standing taller than an average person, it would help raise awareness about this topic. City Hall has promised a park to be built in the area of a burnt storage unit, which was originally part of Bloomberg’s waterfront rezoning, but the process of building a park has “slowed down”. Now the question all residents ask is “Where’s our park?” Not only would having a new park for the whole community be convenient due to the rapid increase of population in these neighborhoods, but the public, especially parents and children would love it compared to commercial buildings. The greener our cities are the better. I know for a fact that some commercial buildings built are completely unnecessary, so instead of wasting money on stores that will not even have a great outcome, why not just create a place for the people of not only these two neighborhoods, but Brooklyn, and any tourists as well. Personally I think that we have gone far in trying to create a “greener planet” compared to let’s say, 2000. So with this proposition, let’s hope to create a world for the people, not the money.

The dangers of bottled water have become more prevalent these last couple of years. As corporations continue to scare and seduce the general public into believing their bottled water is clean, environments become devastated. The percent of sales has risen exponentially for a resource that is essentially free. Americans buy, consume, and throw away nearly 50 billion-12oz plastic bottled every year. What’s even more astounding is that only 23% of that is actually recycled. Everything else ends up incinerated, dumped into landfills, or simply left as litter. Not only does bottled water pollute our environment, but additionally strains our energy resources since it takes nearly 12 million in oil to produce the containers. In 2014, bottled water was the #1 beverage in NYC. A city that is keen on its consumption of non-processed foods, yet struggles with realizing the dangers that bottled water bring to the planet. New Yorkers should become more aware of the dangers of bottled water, since avoiding the purchase of the product is a simple lifestyle change.
My monument idea to raise awareness on this issue is to simply use the bottle itself as a means of communication. It seems like New Yorkers are generally aware of the hazards of bottled water, yet no real means of prevention are imposed upon them – which leads to just consistent consumption.  The sculpture would be a giant Poland Spring bottle, the most popular brand in NYC, however the bottle would be burned in a distinctive manner. The scale of this piece would be around 14ft x 4ft and it’d be made exclusively with recycled bottled water plastic. This would transmute some of the landfill bottles into works of art. A small painted plaque at the bottom of the monument would read “Here Lies X Plastic Bottles”, along with the disfigured monument’s appearance; this gives the viewer a subtle shock of awareness. A secondary type of sculpture that will be used in conjunction with the aforementioned will be another 14ft x 4ft Poland Spring water. However, this version will be intact and used as a tap water dispenser. This would make the sculpture serve a need to the community. Not only would it be saving plastic from being landfill, it’d double as a fountain. The label on the secondary version would also be painted with “Free Water” instead of “Poland Spring”. It’d also display the initiative of the sculptures, and list the multitude of benefits the viewer acquires by consuming the free tap water instead of bottled water. My plan is to have around five to ten of each sculpture spread around New York – prominently the fountain/dispenser version. The sculptures would mainly be around heavy traffic areas of the city. People need to realize the grim truth about bottled water and I believe the burned sculpture does a great job representing that. The dispenser version would mainly be around popular parks as to encourage New Yorkers to take free water.
Blind tests have consistently proven that people can’t tell the difference between bottled and tap water. Bottled water simply provides zero benefits to us as individuals or as a species. It is simply a device created by corporations to keep making money. My goal with this monument proposal is to hopefully strike the emotions of New Yorkers. Have them reconsider their financially wasteful consumption. This movement will not only bring awareness, but also starts a step in the right direction with the implementation of fountains for the city.

BP#9

As consciousness around food becomes more prevalent, consciousness around clothing has become widespread as well. Nowadays, more and more consumers are concerned about where their clothes come from. Some of these concerns include wages of the company’s workers, working conditions, and regulation of child labor laws of the company’s "factories" abroad.

Though there are many individuals who are asking the right questions, there is a significant need for the rest of the public to be aware, as well. According to the International Labor Organization (ILO), 126 million out the 218 million children who participate in child labor work in harmful environments. Because of this horrid reality, millions of children are robbed of a proper childhood. In order to raise awareness about this issue, I am proposing a monument of a recreational area called “Work Hard, Play Hard.” The playground will consist of a large, black sewing machine. Attached to the sewing machine will be a red and yellow swing that will be very close to the needle of the device. Moreover, there will be red and yellow hopscotch squares leading to the machine and to the right of the squares, there will be a jungle gym made from a large pin cushion. Lastly, on the back of the sewing machine, there will be a bright, yellow slide.
This public art will serve as a juxtaposition between the missed childhood and the awful working conditions that some children face while working in a “factory” for a fast fashion retailer. This monument would be on Fashion Ave. next to to the large monuments of a needle and a button, and a man on a sewing machine.

The purpose of this public art is to, hopefully, get people’s attention and open up a dialogue. I want to get folks thinking about what they are exchanging for that $3.99 t-shirt – a childhood. More importantly, I’d like individuals to think about solutions to this prevalent issue. Solutions that don’t involve us sacrificing third-world bodies.

Final Project

The piece is titled Junk Tree. The topic this piece is representing is pollution and waste in the environment. Pollution and excess amounts of trash cause many problems. Trash creates unsanitary living conditions. As garbage rots, it releases methane into the atmosphere which adds to the greenhouse effect. People make around 4.3 pounds of trash every day. 100 million tons of waste end up in one of the many landfills in the US.
Junk Tree is a sculpture made out of various pieces of trash. The sculpture is shaped like a tree. The trunk of the tree is thin and the branches only spread out at the top above people’s heads. Off each branch, trash is hanging down acting as the leaves of the tree. The tree looks droopy as if it is rotting away. Brown pieces of trash are used to make up the trunk and branches. The negative space of the piece is the area below the branches where people will be allowed to walk through.
The purpose of this work is to bring awareness to problems of pollution. The tree is made of trash to represent how trash is making its way into nature and taking over. The tree stand over people’s heads as a message of “look up at the problem.” The piece would be located on a grassy field to further express the idea of trash making its way into nature. The target audience would be anyone. The piece would be located so people would see it in passing.

The topic I decided to pick is the rise of the “sneaker game”. The sneaker game has to do with people and their passion for sneakers. We sell, trade, and discuss sneakers; people who live for sneakers are known as sneaker heads. Reason for this topic is because it has taught me few in and outs of the business world, sneaker game has brought me a separate income to help provide for my family as well as my self. Selling a trading has become a business for me also for youth ages 12 to 24. I want people to know that this is a growing business for people of all different backgrounds . The sneaker game allows people to have an understanding of what’s it like to have the best quality product, being able to sell something so valuable that everybody wants to get their hands on. “For past year Nike made up to 21 billion dollars just off selling basketball sneakers” (Princeton retail analysis). As a sneaker head who sells and trade kicks at a sneaker convention can leave with about $2000 just selling a few pair of kicks, this business builds entrepreneur from a young age.
If I were to build a monument to spread the awareness it would be a Huge NIKE sneaker box with money and sneakers coming out of it, to represent the value of sneaker selling of this generation. The vision I have for this monument a 3D Rectangular shape box, Warm color of red. The texture would be a rough bumpy feel for example, the material of a basketball.  The money or sneaker that comes out of it would be a metallic texture. The color of the money of the sneakers or money would be shinny sliver.  The size of my monument would be 10ft tall x 15ft wide. The location would be Washington Square Park located in the West Village. I choose this specific location because its one of my favorite parks to go, you see a lot youth diversity and sneaker heads hanging out, even selling and trading kicks.

This monument would be for younger audiences who have the same interested as me. NYC has a wide audience of sneaker lovers who would want people from different states or countries to be informed why it’s a big deal to youth. It’s an income, a hobby as well as future job and I want people to embrace it as much as I do.

When the activist group Feminists United complained to the Department of Education stating that their campus, University of Mary Washington, was a hostile place for women they had every right to be concerned. After speaking out against their colleges Rugby team, for singing a disturbing chant that celebrated “violence against women, including murder and battery, sexual violence against women, including assault necrophilia, and rape”, Feminists United members began to be bombarded with messages on the popular app Yik Yak. Feminists United, as individual and as a whole, were threatened with violence and rape. The University of Mary Washington did nothing to protect them, they did nothing to protect Grace Mann.

On April 17th, 20 year old Grace Mann, a member of Feminists United was murdered. Grace Mann was murdered because Feminists United dared to challenge the hostile environment towards women on their school campus. The University of Mary Washington, at this point in time, is not being held responsible for her death. The University, however, should be held responsible for memorializing Grace Mann. I propose that a sculpture of Grace Mann be placed on the campus as a tribute to the ideals that Grace Mann believed in and a reminder to all current and future students to stand up for their personal beliefs.

Project Name: Child Neglect
Intended Audience: Parents
Location: Internet

Being a parent isnt easy at all, and it is getting harder by the year. We used to live in a world when one parent working and the other staying home with the kids was adequste enough to sustain a house hold. Over the years this has changed a great deal. Everything is more expensive, causing both parents to work, and leavng their children in the care of others, or the television. The parents always running around, so busy they forget to be a parent. The child is left alone, getting barely any attention from the one they want it most from. If that wasn’t bad enough, smartphones and or other technological devices are consuming us entirely. With everything being at the touch of our fingers, one would think this would make life easier for us, providing us with more time… but that’s not the case. People will sit on their phones “addicted” to it, playing games, on some sort of “social” media app, or just play old texting. Parents have become so wrapped up in everything else, they forget the most Important thing right in front of them their children. The fact is, children will behave more negative when not given the proper attention and care needed to develop, and many deaths occur every year from child neglect.
On the news, there have been several stories of parents leaving their children in the car while they were doing whatever it is they were doing. This happens more frequently than reported, because only the unfortunate cases get reported on the news. In these stories the kids were left in the car with the wndows up on a hot day, and died from heat exhaustion. In another case the parents left their kids on a cold day in the car, with no hat, gloves, or coat while they went wine tasting. But the parents had a phone connection with the car so they could hear their kids….for 58 minutes. I guess they failed to hear their kids hysterically crying, which was why the police were called. There is also cases you might have heard about with the kids drowning in the tub, water fountain or pool. Infants and toddlers can drown in water only a few inches, mostly these cases happen in the tub. The parents either get distracted or forget something, or really anything that would cause them to leave the room, and it only takes a few seconds. The parents come back to find their kid, unresponsive, cyanotic , and not breathing… and they always say I was only gone for a few seconds.
In 2013 there were 1520 children that died nationally from abuse or neglect, and it is also believed that 50% of the fatalities in children that arent classified as abuse or neglect, in fact are. Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS), is used when an infant simply just dies and there is no explanation for it. The numbers are disgusting, 71.4% of those deaths occurs from neglect, and 46.8% are from abuse. Also, 27.7% where when the mother was alone, 12.4% when the father was alone, 24.6% when both parents acted together, and 17% occurred when a next of kin was “caring” for their kid. The saddest part is only 4.2% came from people unknown. The age of children greatly effected by this was neonates to three years of age, 46.5% are one year or younger, and 34.5% are ages one to three. If you don’t have kids, you should know that these are the hardest ages as a parent. Kids are extremely curious and taking your eyes off of them for a second could be dangerous. Of course, this is all the worst that could happen to your kids, but there are other concerns that will arise from lack of attention.
When kids are negelcted, or anybody, they loose that sense of belonging or significance. When toddlers feel like this, they will cry or throw fits because they think this will get them attention. However the attention they get from this isnt positive. But still, the parents are acknowlaging they exsist, which isnt the kids wanted, but its better than nothing. As the kid gets older, they sort of mature, and go from throwing fits to acting out and misbehaving. This doesn’t always happen at home, this will often happen in public, or at school. As they grow older, this way of misbehaving becomes a lifestyle for them. Poor grades in school, getting into fights, substance abuse etc.
The other ways parents neglect their children is nutritionally. Parents these days would rather let their kids eat whatever they want so they don’t have to hear them throw fits. Childhood obesity is on the rise. In 2012 one out of three kids were either overweight or obese. Not only is Type II diabetes a concern, but other medical problems such as hypertension and cardiovascular disease is also an issue. These kids, don’t know what nutrition is, they just know what tastes good. It is the parents responisiblity to ensure their kids are given a healthy diet. There should be no reason why our children should have to worry about having a heart attack by the age of 30, but sadly they do.
It seems to me that people are having kids just to say look I have kids and I have a family. These kids didn’t ask to be here, they are here because two people decided to create them. Why should they be thrown in front of the tv all day because its an easier to “entertain” them that way than playing with them…. Then hit them when they misbehave, instead of playing superhero or having a tea party with them.  There are no bad kids out there, just bad parents. It isnt an easy task to raise a child, but if you give just a little bit of attention, it makes a world of difference.

Blog Post #9

Project Name: McDonalds Real Menu
McDonalds is a worldwide fast food industry, about 60 million people eat there but lately there has been a lot of speculations about them. McDonalds isn’t all what they show in commercials its bad real bad but most food chains of fast food are bad but McDonalds gets the most applause and attention since they are everywhere! I remember eating McDonalds and enjoying it but as I got older I gained weight upon weight and I would get stomach aches. So I stopped eating it little by little I started to learn how to cook at home and made my own meals instead of eating out. Sometimes I pass by it since it’s around the corner and get tempted but I don’t enter. McDonalds has been losing clients because of they are finding out about them and it’s ironic on how they try to make them seem like they aren’t hiding anything. When they made those commercials about putting signs saying ask us anything. And they made an interview of what the McDonalds food making was and everyone was jolly and happy it’s all to cover and not freak out the clients. McDonalds have their website and you ask questions you’d find answers, America is known for people who are fat and have a lot of fast food restaurants. People don’t know what they are putting into their bodies and what harm this food is doing to them, especially the children. People need to wake up do some research find out what their bodies are consuming and this is why I decided to do some for them to spread the word with others and make them think twice before buying that Big Mac and fries with a side coke. I will do this with art because art is power expresses what one feels about something shows what others can’t seem to see.
So McDonalds feeds about 60 million people every day and these people don’t even know what they just ate. I did some research and found some facts about Coca Cola in Hindustan Times (India) a study shown by Sutirtho Patranobis, New Delhi August 5 says there is poison in soft drinks. The study shows that Coca Cola contains about 30 the amount of pesticide. I mean WHAT! That is unacceptable we aren’t insects. There are activist who believe that the government who can change this does it for a reason to kill us slowly and make their money they treat us like experiments. Now a Big Mac contains supposable 100% beef but does it really? There have been some tests done with food from McDonalds to a watermelon in about 80 days the watermelon decomposed, while the meal from McDonalds didn’t even grow mold in 180 days. I mean the bacteria nor the flies would want it why would you? I mean if it doesn’t decay outside how is it even decomposed in your body? This is why people are getting fat and then have stomach problems the food isn’t decomposed and it’s just piled inside unhealthy. And ads that are shown and hanged showing us what the food looks like but when in reality it looks nothing like it I mean if art is going to be used like that then I want to use it to make people see the truth. And some of the ingredients are GMO ingredients, now with this a lot of people say it’s good but there have been tests done and pictures where the responses to GMO aren’t good at all. Even though McDonalds wasn’t too okay with using GMO potatoes for their fries but they were pressured for them to use the potatoes. Through losing clients McDonalds is trying to change at least some but some will stay and remain the same. Though the market for them is falling they trying to go back up.
Art is big to come across with something that you really want to express or feel strongly about, like I do with the food industry and how food is being made. McDonalds have meat that is only 15% beef and the rest is meat filler cleansed with ammonia, which causes those stomach pains and cancer. And it’s not just the what the food contain but what the workers do to that food, some don’t respect what you eat they can be dirty and sneaky. Some spit in your food step on it give you hair in your burgers, people find different thing’s in their food worms flies mice. It’s disgusting and children eat this crap, parents need to be more open minded and be cautious of what their children are eating. The toxins we consume and the unhappiness and depressed we get eating all this crap. The government should do something of this instead of having more open McDonalds there should be more organic places, I mean we buy expensive unnecessary things and junk food how about something good for our bodies? And the kids are brainwashed with the media T.V that what they eat is healthy and good which is not. McDonalds is the world’s largest user of beef. And the deaths of animals are barbaric and inhumane. Though yes we all eat meat but we as one we choose to eat or not it’s in our conscious.                                                                          We as people have the power to work together and fight. To think before we do to speak and express ourselves. We as the people need to create a better society and think better than to do what the government wants us to do and eat. We need to be more serious about the food consumption we intake especially the children who are growing day by day. As we are eating things unhealthy there are other children who are dying of hunger in other countries. There are people who are creating groups people like Organic Olivia who is speaking about the truth about the food we are in taking of the harmful toxins. We need to spread the word of the fast food industry of what our food contain. We need to join together and work together I can’t stand people judging people about weight and how things they think are bad are actually better then what they are consuming. Food isn’t something we play with it’s our energy our fuel and to turn to human beings that can’t even stand is just horrible. We need to take a stand! And do a better job of our health. I also want to add that I would use art and make a renewed menu of what the people are actually eating like this is what is served for today. We need to spread the word and be more cautious!                                                                                                                                             Sources: http://www.mcspotlight.org/campaigns/translations/trans_uk.html

Final Project!

My topic is “International Mother Language Day and its origin”. I picked this particular topic because it’s related to the country, Bangladesh, where I was born and raised. Many people don’t know about this country and its culture and they don’t really care so it is great that I got a chance to share some history of this country as a form of my public art project and class presentation. I chose a red canvas measuring sixteen inches by twenty inches and used different pictures related to my topic to make a collage on it to convey my ideas. I used nail-paint to highlight a few things. This artwork can be anywhere in the walls of schools, colleges, libraries, subways, malls, galleries or museums and this is for everybody as this day is recognized internationally. Before Bangladesh got its independence in 1971, it was known as East Pakistan covering half of the entire country Pakistan. On 21st February, 1952 when Pakistani government declared Urdu as the national language and also changed the whole education system to this language, people of east Pakistan mostly students from University of Dhaka and Dhaka medical college protested against it to include Bangla as one of the Two national languages. They were shot and killed brutally on the spot by the police.  To honor their sacrifices for their mother tongue and to promote awareness of linguistic and cultural diversity, also to promote the preservation and protection of all languages used by peoples of the world, United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) announced 21st February as International Mother Language Day on 17th November, 1999. It has been observed every year since then. In Bangladesh, it’s a public holiday and people from all walks of life pay their respects by walking barefoot from their home or by laying down flowers to the Martyr's Monument (Shaheed Minar) and replications of that monument, they light candles. They draw Alpana (colorful motifs, sacred art or painting done on a horizontal surface) on streets which emphasizes the bloodshed of their close ones. There is also a famous song named "Amar Bhaiyer Rakte Rangano" ("Coloured in the blood of my brother") which explains the beautiful street art. In my art project, I painted Bangladesh in big letters so that it is visible at first glance being the origin. I used paper prints of different pictures of students protesting, people paying their respects, little girl lighting candles and doing Alpana on the street and also a picture of the word Language in different languages. Last but not the least, I just want to add that the sacrifices my brothers made honor not only my mother tongue Bangla but also all other beautiful cultures and languages. I also believe, there’s war in everyone and everybody has a story to tell.

Final project

The topic I chose was abuse. "Abuse- threat
in (a person or an animal) with cruelty or violence, especially regularly or repeatedly". The reason why I chose this topic was because this is  something I feel strongly about and it is occurring worldwide. Also because one of my close relatives experienced this and thanks to me she was able to get the help she needed. Many people have lost their lives because they are not capable or they are too afraid to leave there spouse. In certain aspects the victim feels intimidated ,less of a person and some believe they will never find any one else because they  begin to feel less of a person. In most cases the victim  feels there spouse loves them and only does it because they are at fault  when in reality they are not the problem. I want people to know that it is never to late to get out of an abusive relationship. Speak to someone ,a friend , a family member, a person that can help you . Loosing your life over an incident that you can control is not acceptable. Abuse not only occurs in women but it also occurs in men. And it is just as bad. There are various way that one can cause abuse , emotionally, verbally and lastly physically.  Abuse escalates from threats and verbal abuse to violence. Emotionally abusive relationships can destroy yourself worth and can cause depression, anxiety ,you feel as if your helpless or alone. Physical abuse is the use of physical force against someone in a way that can endanger  that person . If the person your in a relationship with has hurt you once it's prone to happen again . Here are some questions you can ask yourself to determine if your in an abusive relationship . Do you feel afraid of your partner much of the time ? Does your partner humiliate you or yell at you ? Has your partner physically touched you in an inappropriate way? . Recognize the situation, once you know your in a abusive relationship, it will be easier to get out of it . There are many places to seek for help . For instance you can go online or call the national domestic violence association . I believe a big pink tulip statue with rocks on the bottom would make a good piece of artwork. The pink tulip representing the person /the victims who are going through this , and the rocks around the tulip representing all the bad things they experienced while going through this.
The tulip blooms over the rocks meaning they were able to overcome abuse .My artwork would be a 3 dimensional tulip statue, measuring 12 feet , and it would be called Tourtured flower. The tulip would be pink and the rocks would be black. Pink is a vibrant color representing peace , happiness , prosperity. The stem would be  green and it would have a band-aid over it. The band-aid would be  covering all the  bruises, cuts . I would like to place my statue where everyone can see it ,like in the city near the Empire State Building. Many tourists and people from here go there to take pictures or just for the sake of it . I believe the big pink tulip will capture the audiences attention, making them wonder what the statue is about or what it means. This statue would be for everyone that experienced abuse and were able to overcome it , also for the people that are going through abuse. This  statue can encourage the victims  to leave the relationship,to speak to someone, seek for help and to let the victims know  they are not alone .

W. Rivera's Final project

When i had originally contemplated this assignment i had the consideration i was being put to the task of making a genuine impact on my community and not just a lofty idea. With this thought process in mind, I decided i wanted every occupied apartment in my neighborhood to be aware of this Art project. I've chosen to commemorate an old acquaintance, Alex Botero Jr, shot and killed in an Elevator on Halloween 2011.

For my art piece, I've incorporated four images on a flyer to be distributed on Halloween as a remembrance to this fallen being. The images are of Alex Botero, a set of public housing elvators, a pistol and surveillance cameras (credit to Geofrey Ashford). I knew this would work would not be considered art without a title (credit to Dante, philosopher of art) but i kept coming up with terrible ideas, due to my non closeness with Alex. I received a call during English class from Rikers Island from Jason (Alex's real life best friend, who is my best friend now) and took advantage by asking him for help with my project. His feedback led me to the quote "i did not make it out of the projects. will you????"
For the distribution of these flyers i'm awaiting Halloween 2015 to make a total of at least four hundred copies (one for every apartment) and will be putting them under front doors and building lobbies. My inspiration for this effort was Grand Theft Auto 3 (video game by rock star) in which there is a mission that leaves the city engulfed with a promotional flyer of a an actress, after completion of a certain mission. The flyers are nowhere to be found throughout the city before the mission, but are scattered everywhere upon mission completion.
I know that i'm a going to have people talking with this artistic expression when the time comes for it. I just hope it's well received.
