Phantom (kingdom of all the animals and all the beasts is my name) is a piece by Daniel Steegmann Mangrane. The piece is a virtual environment using the Oculus rift. The environment is an area in the Mata Atlantica rainforest in southern Brazil. I think this shows a shift towards the future of art because it is immersing the viewer into the piece more than other art pieces. Something negative about this piece is that unlike a painting or sculpture, it can only be viewed by one person at a time. This work uses a new piece of technology, the oculus rift to achieve it's creation of a virtual environment. The oculus rift is worn on the head like goggles and allows the viewer to see the virtual environment. There is a lot of potential for future art pieces to create their own environments. This piece is similar to other forms of art because like other forms of art, it creates and environment the viewer can enjoy but this technology allows the viewer to be inside the environment which can't be done through painting.
This piece is The Documentary: Geocentric Puncture. It is a mixed media installation by Guan Xiao. The piece is made up of camera equipment, a backdrop, and a cultural or aesthetic artifact. The piece in a way takes the viewer "behind the scenes" of photography. The viewer can see the edge of the backdrop which usually is hidden by photographs. It looks like a studio for taking pictures of the artifacts in the piece. I think this piece shows a shift towards the future of art because it is looking at art through a new and different perspective. The piece is using technology in a physical way to shape it into an aesthetic form. I don't have a picture of the third part of this piece but in it there is a tower made out of camera lenses. This is similar to sculptures and other three dimensional forms of art but what makes it different is the use of technology to change the viewers perspective of the piece.
Great observations here Geoffrey- especially on the Guan Xiao work- very interested in your ideas about how it demystifies the photograph by revealing the set...like a comment on the artifice of art. But why so brief? This essay had a 500 word minimum.
