Blog Post #1- Art: Where and Why
Although this picture was not taken today, it's from a place that I walk by often called the High Line, an elevated park on 10th avenue in Manhattan. The artwork changes every few months, but this one is a mural- a 2D painting on a large brick wall. It takes up the whole side of a building. You can see from the picture how big it is compared to the people, I'm not sure exactly but I think about 30 feet high. It's mostly bright hot pink color, with gray at the top and white letters. There is not a lot of detailed images- it is pretty simple white text on a background, but because of the tree in front of it that sort of becomes part of the artwork too. In terms of the purpose of art as we discussed in class today, I would say that this artwork gives tangible forms to feelings- because it's expressing an emotion; also it creates an extraordinary version of an ordinary object (the building wall) and also refreshes our vision of the daily world. The artist makes us stop on our path as we are walking by to notice the artwork because of the bright color and the text, and how it looks against the light sky. Also, because the park is above 10th avenue, I think that some cars can see it too, especially if they are stuck in traffic so it is a smart location for the artist to choose. He has the eyes of the people walking and the people in cars below.
