Blog Post 1

This is the imagine circle that is a part of Strawberry Fields, the John Lennon memorial, in Central Park. I pass by it often while dog walking and it is always busy with people taking pictures, a person playing Beatles songs, and others just passing through. It is 2-D form of art, a mosaic made out of stone with the word "Imagine" in the center, the name of a famous song by John Lennon. The song expressed a lot of Lennon's beliefs. The artist meant to give tangible form to the idea of a world without conflict by placing that word in the center of the piece. The only colors it has are white and black. The circle is around seven or eight feet in diameter. To me, this is also a 4-D form of art because it's always changing. The circle itself doesn't change but the people around it will add things like flowers, a green apple, or candles making it colorful. Sometimes flowers are left in the shape of a peace sign. The area around the circle is a designated quiet zone to create a peaceful atmosphere. Watching people walk through and interact with it is also part of the experience created by this piece. By designing the imagine circle, the artist made a place to commemorate John Lennon. It is located at the intersection of the two paths in strawberry fields making it impossible for anyone entering or exiting strawberry fields to not see it. The artist also refreshes our views on the world by spreading the Lennon's belief in a world of peace.

  1. Very good post! I agree with how you described the "function" of this as an art work- about giving feelings a tangible form and refreshing our vision. Might it also be to record and commemorate AND also a place for human purpose? I think the way you described it it would also fall into those categories. Also, very good observation on how it is changing all the time- we will talk more over the semester about art that changes form. Very good start on the blog!
