A couple of weeks earlier, one of my cousin and i were going somewhere via
6 train. We saw this subway poster inside the train by James Gulliver Hancock
and we found it really interesting. I came across this poster other times too
in other trains. It is a beautiful drawing, very detailed. I made a collage with
a few pictures my cousin took of the same poster just to clarify. The poster is
hanged above the seats and the window of the train. It is rectangular shaped.
It is pretty long in length probably about 3 feet and its height should
be about 1 feet.
I absolutely loved the artwork because of its various colors and items to look at.
You can’t figure out every item in just one gaze. It’s a good time pass, i have
to say. It is perfect for the bored passengers of the train. The colors used in this artwork are
red, blue, purple, green, pink, yellow, white and grey. The viewer can see the drawing
of the statue of liberty, clouds floating around, the underground transit
system, people cycling around, street lights, taxi cabs, car, truck, a
person who is probably going to work carrying a cup of coffee, a person fishing
in a cup of hot chocolate, a girl drinking soda or some other kind of drink, different
type of foods such as ice-cream, donuts, cupcake with a cherry on top and some
more coffee. There are a lot of buildings but natural things too like trees, flowers,
bird and bee in this poster. Then there is a camera, a little heart and the list goes on. I think
the artist made it to give its viewers a mixed up sense of the busy day to day New York
City life. I feel this way because something is always happening here as we
know this city never sleeps. There are so many things to do, food to eat and places to explore here. It is a city of travelers thus the camera. This
is only my opinion. Just like this, each of the objects of this drawing can stand
for different type of things or issues. So i think the purpose of this artwork is to construct meaningful images and forms and
to refresh our vision to see the world in a new way.
A very good selection Anika, and you described the "need or function" of it very clearly- it does give a viewer a refreshed vision of the city we live in. Great start on the blog!
