blog #2
This picture I found in the Whitney Museum of American Art. The artist is Juan Abreu, and this piece is Untitled.
There is a mixture of colors, hard to determine which is really dominate. I think there are more secondary than primary. I see more maroon which is made from red and blue. The only primary color I can really see if yellow, and green. The texture of it looks smooth. For the most part everything is going in on everything direction with no interruption. The positive space here would be the double sided torso and head and negative would be the back round, but I consider everything to be positive space. It just seems like the picture wouldn't be complete without it. The value of this of this is a is more on the dark side, despite some light colors in this. The lines in the "negative" space is all vertical, but surrounding the positive the lines are diagonal. This picture is 2D, and it looks like the artist wanted to give it a 3rd effect.
I spent a bit of time looking through a lot of pictures, but this one stood out the most. I think the artist didn't name this so the the viewers could come up with there own ideas. If he did, then they might be lead to view it one way, other than what they would originally think. When I look at this I think ferrying reason for the positive and negative space are similar in colors is because they are the same. This person is in pain and anguish. The reason for the double side is no matter where he turns, what he does, nothing seems to get better. I think the back round represents his world, and he might be trying to get away from it, to break free from it. it seems he is in an everyday struggle.

Yes you are right to consider everything positive space here- the whole canvas is FULL so I would agree and say there is no negative space. It's an interesting image- symmetrical almost so you could almost look at it upside down and it would be the same. Good observations, just be a little more careful when your write because sometimes it gets confused, like "When I look at this I think ferrying reason for the positive and negative space are similar in colors is because they are the same."
ReplyDeleteGood choice of artwork!
